Biography

Jonas Junias was born on November 24, 1993 in the town of Swakopmund, Erongo Region .

He achieved the first serious success at the international level in the 2014 season when he joined the main team of the Namibian national team and attended the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , from where he brought the silver dignity award won in the light welterweight category - the only defeat suffered in the final decisive match from Scottish Josh Taylor . Thus, he became only the fourth Namibian boxer in the whole history who managed to get a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

In 2015, he won a silver medal at the African Games in Brazzaville , where he lost to Algerian Abdelkader Shadi in the welterweight final.

On the African Olympic qualification in Cameroon, he overcame all his rivals in the tournament grid, and thanks to this performance he won the right to defend the honor of the country at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . At the opening ceremony of the Games, Junius honorably carried the banner of Namibia [1] , but here he was remembered not by his performance, but above all by the scandal - shortly before the start of the competition, he was arrested for attempting to rape a maid in the Olympic village [2] . As a result, he was still allowed to compete in the Olympic boxing tournament - in the 1/32 finals he met with Frenchman Hassan Amzil , lost to him with a score of 0: 3 and dropped out of the fight for medals [3] [4] .

After the Olympics, Jonas Junius remained in the Namibian boxing team and continued to take part in major international tournaments. So, in 2017, he defeated all rivals and won the gold medal at the African Championship in Congo [5] .
