Story

After the end of World War II in 1946, British military nurse Claire Randall and her husband Frank leave for Scottish Inverness on their second honeymoon. Frank, a professor of history, studies the history of the family, and Claire picks flowers near the menhirs on Craig-on-Dun Hill. Touching one of the stones, Claire suddenly faints. She awakens in the 18th century and meets the ancestor of husband Captain Jack Randall. The Scottish Gael who appeared brings Claire to his Mackenzie clan , where Claire helps to cure Jamie's shoulder dislocation. Here she understands that she is transported into the past, called an English widow, heading to France for her family. The Gael do not believe her and take her to Leoch Castle, where Claire is trying to find a way to return in due time.

The Gaelles of 1743 see Claire as a foreigner, a " Saxon ", a "foreigner", far from Gaelic culture. Her medical knowledge deserves their respect, but the leader of the clan, Colum Mackenzie, considers her an English spy.

To save Claire from the suspicions and interrogations of Captain Randall, the clan chieftain Dougal marries her to Jamie, making her a Scottish citizen. On the way to the megalithic hill, Craig-on-Dun Claire comes across Captain Randall's men and asks Jamie to save her. Returning to Leoch Castle, Claire continues to treat people, teaches medicine to the wife of a local official Gailis Duncan. Soon, both are accused of witchcraft, and Jamie keeps up to date to save Claire. While in custody, Claire discovers that Gailis is part of an organization that wants to return King Jacob to the Scottish throne. Before Claire escapes with smallpox vaccine scars on her body, Gailis realizes that Gailis is also from the future.

Claire reveals her true story to Jamie, who takes her to Craig-on-Dun. Before deciding to stay or leave, she decides to stay. Jamie brings her to her house in Lallybroch, where they are met by his sister Jenny with her husband Ian. According to one of the tenants hiding from the British, Jamie was sent to Wentworth prison. Claire and the Mackenzie clan attempt to save Jamie fails, Claire is captured by Randall, who rapes Jamie in exchange for Claire's freedom. Claire tells Randall that she is a witch and predicts the day of his death, which she knew from the family history of her husband Frank. Jamie's ex-mother, Sir Marcus MacRannoch, is organizing Jamie's escape from victimization by Randall. At McRannoch Fortress, Claire heals Jamie’s wounds. After healing, Jamie, with his godfather Murtach and Claire, flee to the French monastery of Saint-Ann-de-Beaupré, where Uncle Jamie serves as rector. There, Claire realizes that she is pregnant [4] .

Creating a novel

Diana Gabledon wanted to practice writing without a definite idea in her head. After watching the War Games series about Doctor Who [5], her eyes caught the hero Jamie McCrimmon - a young Scot from 1745. A young Scot in a kilt did not go out of her head for a long time, and then she decided to write a novel about the events of the 18th century in Scotland.

Gabledon originally planned to create a historical novel, but during her work, the heroine Claire “immediately took up the story and began to tell it herself, making cunning modern comments about everything” [6] . Then Gabledon made the heroine a modern woman who came to Scotland in the 18th century.

The series "Alien" includes several books:

  • Outlander ( English Outlander , 1991)
  • Dragonfly in Amber ( eng. Dragonfly in Amber , 1992)
