Story

During lectures on literature, evening student Sasha Mukhin, a subway driver, sleeps and dreams.

In approximate accordance with the subject of the lectures, he is either trying to prevent Pushkin’s duel with Dantes , or intervenes in the events of Spartak’s rebellion, or is present at the renunciation of Galileo , or meets a person from the future and learns from him his future fate.

All episodes are filled with mockery of various cliches and stereotypes. So, the arena of the Roman circus and what is happening on it for the most part replicates modern football matches. “Well, you, we have not burned for a long time. - And Galileo? - What is Galileo? Everything is in order with him, he died his death ... ”- this dialogue reminded the Soviet intelligentsia about the fate of the poet and writer Boris Pasternak . When the main character in the XVII century is referred to an uninhabited island, they explain to him that “the sun, air and water” are the right remedies for his sinful aspirations.

At the same time, the film’s narrative clearly shows bright ideas and enthusiasm of that period of the “thaw” of the 1960s - an attempt by the young generation to redraw world history under the realities of a socialist worldview and show the superiority of the Soviet system. Although the hero of Shakurov himself is indecisive and fearful before meeting with the relatives of his girlfriend.

All the ladies met in the “past” by face and name are similar to his beloved, and as they get to know their behavior and speech becomes more and more “modern”.

In the finale, meeting with his girlfriend in the subway, Mukhin sees on the escalator traveling towards the same faces that he had met in dreams about the past. And the train is led by a man with the appearance of Spartak.

Criticism

Subsequently, the film was criticized ("they woke Mukhin, put the audience to sleep"); one of the reviews was called “Don't.” As a result, the picture received the “fourth rolling category” (5-10 copies from the original), which was tantamount to “putting the film on the shelf”. Due to the small circulation, the movie was limitedly distributed to peripheral cinemas and was hardly broadcast on television.
