Biography

In 1953 he graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University , then was a graduate student at the Department of Inorganic Chemistry (1953-1956). In 1956, he successfully defended his dissertation and began work at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences , where he subsequently defended his doctoral dissertation in the field of radiation chemistry in 1964.

In 1990, he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1991 - the Russian Academy of Sciences) in the department of general and technical chemistry (physical chemistry). He served as deputy director - head of the laboratory of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Two children. He was the chief editor of the scientific journal Chemistry of High Energies, as well as the regional editor of the international scientific journal Radiation Physics and Chemistry. He was a member of the editorial board of the Mendeleev Communications journal.

He died on March 5, 2002. He was buried at Troekurovsky cemetery , section 4.

Scientific activity

The main areas of scientific activity of the scientist are radiation chemistry and radiation technology.

In 1962, Pikaev discovered the formation of a hydrated electron in irradiated frozen alkali solutions using the electron paramagnetic resonance method. Based on the obtained experimental data, Pikaev wrote the monograph Solvated Electron in Radiation Chemistry (1969).

As a result of his work, important fundamental and applied results were obtained, which served to a large extent the development of ideas about the mechanism of action of ionizing radiation from the point of view of chemistry, as well as the development of a new field - radiation technology. Pikaev was one of the first to use pulsed electromagnetic radiation for his research. He also investigated some features of radiolysis under conditions of ultrahigh dose rates, discovered a new method for obtaining absolute rate constants in fast radiation-chemical reactions, etc. All these studies served as the basis for his monograph “Pulse radiolysis of water and aqueous solutions” (1965).

In 1987, A. K. Pikaev completed many years of work on the three-volume monograph “Modern Radiation Chemistry,” which describes in detail most of the sections of fundamental and applied radiation chemistry. In recent years, he paid much attention to the radiation chemistry of aqueous solutions of actinides: A. K. Pikaev is a co-author of the discovery of the heptavalent state of americium. In addition, he was engaged in the study, development and implementation of combined electron beam methods for treating water and wastewater.

A. K. Pikaev is the author of approximately 600 scientific publications, more than 30 copyright certificates and patents, as well as 13 monographs .
