Biography
Vaiso hides details about his youth [4] . In various interviews, he claimed that he once lived in France [5] , grew up in New Orleans , Louisiana [6] , and his family lives in Chalmett, Louisiana [7] . According to Vaiso, in 2003 he was 34 years old, therefore, he was born in 1968 or 1969 [8] . However, actor Greg Sestero writes in his memoirs that his acquaintance had Vaiso immigration documents [9] , from which it supposedly followed that Vayso was born in one of the countries of the socialist camp in the 1950s [10] .
In the 2016 documentary “Room Full of Spoons”, director Rick Harper, analyzing data about Tommy, came to the conclusion that he was from the Polish city of Poznan [11] . He in November 2017 on the Jimmy Kimmel show confirmed that he was from Europe [12] . In December 2017, in an interview with Howard Stern, Vaiso stated that he was Catholic and spoke French [13] .
According to Sestero, Vaiso moved to San Francisco , where he worked as a street toy seller and changed his name to Thomas Pierre Vaiso [14] . Vaiso himself claims that at about the same time he studied psychology in Auckland [15] [16] .
According to Sestero, in San Francisco, Vaiso changed many professions, including a waiter and a hospital worker, and then founded Street Fashions USA, which sold defective blue jeans at a discount [17] . As a result, Vaiso went into real estate, partially acquired and rented large retail space in San Francisco and Los Angeles , which made him rich. Sestero himself believes that such a quick enrichment of Vaiso, previously engaged in manual labor, is unlikely [18] . Many people who participated in the filming of “The Room” believe that the film was a cover for organized money laundering, but Tommy himself denies this [19] .
Sestero says that the turning point in Vaiso’s life was a car accident in which he was in California : another driver drove into a red light and crashed into Vaiso’s car. He spent several weeks in the hospital [20] , and after recovering, he decided to take up the movie [21] . The people who strongly influenced Tommy are James Dean , Marlon Brando , Tennessee Williams , Orson Welles , Elizabeth Taylor and Alfred Hitchcock [22] .
Personal life
Vaiso does not want to reveal details about his personal and family life. In 2017, he said the following phrase for “ Entertainment Weekly ”: “I believe that personal life should be personal, and professional life should be professional, that’s my point of view, and I have a right to it” [23] . During an interview with James Franco in 2016, Vaiso called Greg Sestero his “best friend” [24] .
