Biography

Rostislav Krassovsky was born on July 11 ( 23 ), 1841 ; came from the nobility of the Chernigov province . He graduated from the Chernigov gymnasium ; Then he studied at the Konstantinovsky Military School (1860-1862) and at the Nikolaev Engineering Academy (1882-1864).

From February 2 to September 30, 1873, Krassovsky, with the rank of captain, was in charge of the engineering department of the detachment formed for military operations against the Khivaites , and for this campaign he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree with swords and a bow and St. Stanislav of the 2nd degree with swords and bowknot.

With the beginning of the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878. , Krassovsky was appointed to the field engineering department of the army. From May 28 to July 7, 1877 he was a member of the Oltenitsky detachment, appointed to organize the crossing of the Danube against the Turtukai fortress, and was promoted to lieutenant colonel for " differences in affairs ". July 18, 1877 was sent to Sistovo to supervise the construction of fortifications; On September 4, he was sent to the Western detachment for instrumental shooting of the fortifications of the Russian and Turkish positions and on the 14th, he shot under enemy fire, after which he was abandoned during the siege of Plevna , with the order to monitor the construction of new fortifications, batteries and trenches. By order of General Count Eduard Ivanovich Totleben , from October 30 to November 12, Krassovsky built a dam on the Grivitsa River under enemy fire. For differences during the taxation of Plevna and when it was captured on November 28, 1877, he was awarded the command of the Golden Arms with the inscription " For Courage " . After the surrender of Plevna, he was the head of the survey of the fortified positions of Plevna, Shipka and Arab Konak , for the manufacture of relief models of the indicated positions according to these plans.

In 1890, Rostislav Vladimirovich Krassovsky was promoted to major general , and in 1898 he was awarded the highest gratitude [1] .

In further service, in addition to full-time posts, Krassovsky since 1900 was a member of the commission on armament of fortresses, and a member of the engineering committee, he took an active part in the consideration and study of all issues related to the construction of Russian fortresses.

Of the military-literary works by Krassovsky, the most noteworthy article is “The rational type of long-term fortifications ” in the 12th edition of the Engineering Journal for 1881. In this article, illustrated by the drawings of several types of forts offered by him, the author introduces new ideas for camouflaging the fort and its artillery positions, giving the construction the corresponding forms. Krassovsky Fort ( see drawing ) has two infantry shafts with the command + 13′i +28 ′; of which the front, low, covers the fort with gorges . The artillery position (artillery shaft) located inside the fort, with a fire line of +17 ′, is perfectly masked in front and from the sides by the fort's high infantry shaft (+28 ′). The outer slopes of the shafts and their lines of fire are rounded; no traverse protrudes above the high shaft line of fire. Of the other characteristic anticipations of the future, Krassovsky’s projects should note the location of the flanking buildings behind the counter-escarp, as well as the original arrangement of the fort's internal artillery position in the form of a series of gun wells connected by casemate passages, which are alternately adjoined by powder chambers, then transverse galleries for communication with the inside of the fort and for sheltering people.

Krassovsky also designed and implemented a special type of hiding installation for a light anti-storm gun.

Rostislav Vladimirovich Krassovsky died on January 7 [2] 1909 with the rank of lieutenant general and was buried in the Nikolsky cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra . The grave has not survived to date; at the beginning of the 21st century, the Revival of Cultural Heritage charity foundation installed a memorial double-sided board made of granite near the Nikolskaya Church (the second side is dedicated to General Yevgeny Vasilyevich Bogdanovich , whose burial after the October coup was also destroyed by the Bolsheviks ).
