Gameplay

The essence of the game

There are two symbolically drawn fighters on the dohyo ( sumo counter), who are in an unstable equilibrium position. After the readiness signal (touching the ground with hands), the athletes begin to converge, trying to push the opponent so that he falls. The first one who loses loses the round , after five lost rounds, if the gap between the rivals is 2 points or more, the game ends and the winner is announced. Otherwise, the game continues (and can theoretically continue indefinitely) until the gap reaches 2 points.

Basic Modes

There are two main game modes: single player and multiplayer .

Gray fighter strongly pushed blue, and the latter falls

In the first, the player controls one of the wrestlers, and in the second, two people play with one computer at once, using the keys on different edges of the keyboard .

In Sumotori Dreams, a player can use only six keys: two rotate the camera, two more make the dummy move closer to the opponent or move away from him, and the last two keys are responsible for pushing the opponent away - with one or two hands. Thus, when playing together, classic control games are used for games: the cursor keys (arrow keys) and the WASD key group.

Secret Mode

You can enter the secret mode if you push a cube between the columns in the main menu using a mouse click, while hitting one of the plates enclosing the dohyo on the right side. In the secret mode, the wrestler is only one, and the only thing he can do is to try not to fall or, falling, stand up. The player controls the mouse and throws dice into the athlete, taking him out of the equilibrium position. Many consider the wrestler’s moves to be fun before falling or trying to get up [1] .

Technologies

Wrestler trying to get up

Despite the small size, which is a hallmark of the demoscene, Sumotori Dreams has a fairly developed physics engine using Ragdoll physics . Wrestlers can even fall from their own sharp movements or from the slightest collision with the enemy, they destroy the fences around the site, falling on them, and rise, relying first on all four limbs, later squatting and shifting the center of gravity closer to the legs.

Versions

Three versions of the game are relevant: 1.00, first presented on demopati, 1.02, occupying slightly less than 140 KB on a hard disk, but with improved compatibility with hardware , and a version without textures , which has a size of 29 KB. All of them are freely available on the website of the author. There is also a paid version, which adds the ability to select the arena, the behavior of computer rivals, the participation of up to four rivals, as well as the ability to create and connect your own arenas.

Reaction

Sumotori Dreams does not have reviews in "classic" game publications because of its " underground " origin, but it is very well received by players: for example, Absolute Games portal users rate is 81% [2] . As a rule, players can not single out any feature of the game, but simply note the general atmosphere and the fascination of the game. In addition, many are amazed at Sumotori Dreams' technical excellence, paying attention to its size and capabilities.

Awards

The game won the first place in the nomination "96K game" (games that occupy less than 96 KB) on demopati Breakpoint 2007 [3] .
