Windsor agreement

Windsor Accord - Secret Anglo-Portuguese Declaration . Signed October 14, 1899 in Windsor by the British Foreign Secretary Salisbury and the Portuguese Ambassador to London, Soveral . The declaration guaranteed the inviolability of the territory of Portugal and its colonies and contained:

  1. Excerpt from the preamble of the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of 29. I 1642 (on the establishment of friendly relations between Portugal and England).
  2. The text of the secret article of the treaty dated 23. VI 1661, according to which England undertook to protect all possessions of the Portuguese crown from the encroachments of any power.
  3. Portugal's obligation not to allow troops and military equipment and materials for the Boer republics to pass through the territory of its African colonies.

The Windsor Accord was the result of England's rejection of the plans for the Anglo-German partition of the Portuguese colonies , discussed in 1898. At the same time, it was supposed to strengthen the British position in Africa during the Boer War . [one]
