History
Suceava was the capital of the Principality of Moldova from 1365 to 1565. Under the reign of King Alexander the Good (1400-1432), Suceava became in 1401 the residence of the Metropolitan of Moldova. In the same years, the remains of the great martyr St. John the New, or John of Trebizond, a Greek merchant who was tortured by the Tatars in Crimea at the end of the 14th century, were taken here. St. John the New became the patron saint of Moldova. Around the grave of the saint in Suceava was built the temple of the metropolis. This connected Suceava not only with Constantinople, but also with Trebizond. All subsequent rulers of Moldova, right up to the 19th century, brought annually gifts to the Greek monastery of Panagia Sumela south of Trebizond . In 1565, under Turkish pressure, the capital was moved to Iasi . John the New was not tortured in the Crimea, but in the city, which is currently called Belgorod-Dniester . He was buried there (the burial place has been preserved to this day) before the relics were transferred to Suceava.
