Geography
Located on the shores of the Firth of Clyde Bay, 35 km northwest of Glasgow . The nearest airport is Glasgow , 21 km east of Port Glasgow.
History
Until 1667, the city was called Newark. The history of the area is closely connected with Newark Castle and the Maxwell family. Its location made it possible to unload ships from the Netherlands and France and carry cargo further in small vessels along the Clyde River to Glasgow . In 1667, construction of the harbor and breakwater began here. This allowed Newark to become Glasgow's first deep seaport and was soon named Port Glasgow. In 1833, Port Glasgow became Port Franco . Around the same time, the Clyde riverbed was deepened, so the city lost its port function.
In the XIX century, the city became the center of shipbuilding.
