Lentochnik camilla

Lentochnik Camilla [1] , or Lentochnik minor [2] [3] , or Camilla [3] ( lat. Limenitis camilla ) is a diurnal butterfly from the Nymphalidae family . The name comes from Camilla - in Greek mythology - the Amazon, who died in the battle of Rutuls with Aeneas.

Content

Description

The length of the front wing 23-31 mm, wingspan 45-60 mm. The wings are black and gray, in males with a slight bluish tint closer to their roots, with a white intermittent band and small brown spots on the underside of the hind wing and on top of the front. The undersides of the wings are variegated, orange-brown with a white band.

Europe , the Caucasus , the countries of the Transcaucasus, Turkey , the Southern Urals , the Amur region , Primorye , northeast China, Korea , Japan .

Habitats

Forest and forest-steppe zone of Eastern Europe . It is found in various types of small-leaved, broad-leaved and mixed forests, mainly along the banks of rivers and reservoirs, under the forest canopy, where there are sparse places or small glades, as well as on forest edges, in light forests. They live mainly locally, preferring not to leave the limits of their habitats, they are not inclined to long-distance migrations. In the mountains usually rises no higher than 1500 meters.

Developed in two generations. In the north of the range only one generation. The flight of the first generation in June - July, the second generation - in the second half of August - until 1-2 decades of September. Males form clusters on the banks of puddles, reservoirs, on umbrella flowers, litters, rotten fruits. Females lead a hidden lifestyle, stay mostly near the treetops, descending to the ground extremely rarely.

Reproduction

Females lay 1 egg on the upper surface of the leaves of plants; the caterpillar stage lasts summer, and from autumn to May, with wintering at the second - third age. The caterpillars feed on: Tatar honeysuckle (Lonicera tatarica), Common honeysuckle (Lonicera xylosteum). They pupate on leaves or branches. The pupal stage lasts 8-14 days.
