Mouline

Skein of floss (right) and other threads for embroidery

Mouline thread ( fr. Mouliné ) - yarn obtained by the factory method or handmade, specially made for embroidery or other types of needlework .

World brands of mouline thread manufacturers - DMC , Madeira and Anchor . In addition to them, floss thread produced by Gamma and a spinning and yarn mill named after Kirov in St. Petersburg. These cotton threads are designed specifically for embroidery. Mouline thread is sold in skeins of 8 (DMC, Gamma, Anchor), 10 meters (Madeira and PNK IM. Kirov), in some stores you can buy threads per meter. Each mouline thread manufacturer has his own set of colors; for color matching, you can use the color map (catalog with samples of threads of each color). If the colors for one brand of mouline thread are indicated in the embroidery scheme and it is required to use threads from another manufacturer for embroidery, then they are guided by the tables for transferring the colors of the mouline thread from one brand to another or comparing shades using color cards.

Leading manufacturers have floss not only monophonic, but also melange (with a smooth transition from a lighter tone to a darker one of the same color), multicolor (with a smooth transition from one color to another), metallic.

Selecting Embroidery

High-quality threads should be even, have a bright, clean color, do not fade, do not fade in the sun. A distinctive feature of embroidery threads is the clear correspondence of the skein color to its number. The number is affixed to the skein. It is also indicated on the scheme for embroidery, in its legend . Most commercially available designs are designed for DMC threads, less commonly for Madeira. Patterns in Russian-language embroidery magazines have been developed in most cases for floss colors DMC, Gamma and PNK IM. KIROV, less often for other brands. On the network you can find quite easily the conversion table of thread numbers from one company to another.

The shades of color numbers can vary from batch to batch, only world brands give guarantees of color consistency, however, in recent years they have had a huge number of cases of color failure, so it is better to buy enough threads for all the work immediately, especially of unknown brands. Threads, the quality of which is in doubt, are tested for tightness before work. To do this, they must be wetted in hot water and stretched with force through a white cloth - unstable dye will leave a mark. A similar check can be done in the store, by forcefully stretching a piece of thread through a wet handkerchief. Bad thread will leave marks immediately.

In addition to special “embroidery” cotton floss threads, wool , silk and even ordinary bobbin threads can be used for embroidery. But this can only be done for simple paintings with a small number of colors and a high degree of variability.
