History

Information about the workshops has been preserved since 1901. By 1915, they already had a foundry and a mechanical workshop, two berths, a forge, and a pipe-copper section. Until 1933, ships were repaired in the boathouse, where workers (about 60 people) manually pulled boats and barges ashore. Only in 1933 the workshops were equipped with electric winches.

By order of the People’s Commissar of Water Transport No. 219 dated November 4, 1936, the Kerch ship repair workshops were given the name “Ship Repair Plant”.

The Great Patriotic War forced the plant to retrain from a civilian enterprise into a factory for the conversion of ships into warships and their armaments. SRZ received an order for the manufacture of shells for air bombs, mortars and hand grenades. The plant repaired the fleet until the last and became the only enterprise not dismantled during the retreat of the Soviet troops. Workers left the city on November 12, 1941, and after 3 days the Germans occupied Kerch (the first occupation). A month and a half later, Soviet troops threw them back and the workers returned to work. The front line passed through the city 4 times, endless bombing completely destroyed the plant. Despite this equipment, which survived, it was transferred and successfully worked in underground adits.

In the first post-war years, the main task of the enterprise was to restore ships that were damaged in battles.

60-80 years became the period of the greatest prosperity of the plant. Shipyard began to carry out partial and overhaul of ships, produced engineering products.

After the collapse of the USSR

The collapse of the Soviet Union crushed the Kerch giant. The company was in decline. Until 2008, the plant had accumulated huge debts, but despite the debts, SRZ continued to work, repairing Ukrainian and foreign ships.

The company has two floating docks, universal equipment is installed, diversified profile and convenient water area allows repairing river-sea vessels. This distinguishes the plant from other shipyards of the Black and Azov Seas. Many Russian ships were also repaired at the shipyard. The Black Sea ports in Russia almost freeze in winter, for example, the Novorossiysk port, although it does not freeze, is not very popular for ship repair due to the vagaries of the weather in this region.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the plant has had 8 production workshops: mechanical, complex-dock, cabinet-welding, electrical (formerly tool), experimental, foundry, woodworking, transport, and auxiliary production: mechanical repair and energy sections.

In 2013, the plant, which at that time was under crisis management, was once again included in the privatization plan. In February 2014, it was bought out by Yuvas-trans for $ 3.78 million with an obligation to pay debts in the amount of UAH 35.482 million.
