Porkkala ( Fin. Porkkala or Porkkalanniemi , Swedish. Porkala or Porkala udd , formerly Parkalout ) is a peninsula in Finland , located in Kirkkonummi in the Uusimaa region, 30 km west of the capital, Helsinki .

The historical Swedish name of the peninsula is Porkkala-Udd ( Swede. Porkala udd ), where udd is the prong, tip, tip [1] , Swede. udde - cape [1] .
The Porkkala Udd Peninsula has always had strategic importance. The raid is well protected from winds and waves, and depths from 14 to 26 meters allow you to receive a significant number of ships and vessels of large displacement.
The Porkkala district is the narrowest point of the Gulf of Finland. Near Porkkala is the island of Mäkiluoto ( Fin. Mäkiluoto ), from which only 36 km to the Estonian coast ( Naissaar / Norgen island).
In 1944, after the end of the Soviet-Finnish war - the continuation war , according to the terms of the Moscow Armistice, the peninsula was leased to the USSR for 50 years. The Porkkala-Udd naval base was established on the peninsula. However, in 1955 the Soviet naval base was abolished, and in January 1956 the peninsula was returned to Finland early.
