Brooke, Fulk Greville

Lord Fulke-Greville Brooke ( Eng. Fulke-Greville Brooke ; October 3, 1554 - September 30, 1628 ) is an English poet , playwright and writer of the Elizabethan era . A statesman, member of the House of Commons of England (at various times between 1581 and 1621), treasurer of the British Navy, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Commissioner of the Exchequer of Great Britain.

Biography

Educated at Jesus College, Cambridge University . In 1585, Greville agreed to go with Sir Francis Drake on his expedition against the Spanish West Indies, but Queen Elizabeth I forbade Drake to take him with him, and also did not allow him to join Robert Dudley 's army in the Netherlands .

Greville participated in the Battle of Qutra in 1587. Around 1591, Greville served for a short time in Normandy under the leadership of King Henry IV of France, where he took part in religious wars.

During the reign of Elizabeth I and James I held various senior positions. In 1604, for his services to the crown, he was presented with the Warwick Castle .

In 1621, he became the first Baron Brooke.

He was stabbed to death by his own servant in 1628, who considered himself deprived in the will of the baron.

Creativity

He was friends with most famous writers of his time. He was a member of the circle of poets called the Areopagus , which included Gabriel Harvey , Edmund Spencer , Philip Sidney and Edward Dayar .

He is the author of two political tragedies (Mustapha and Alaham), several didactic poems (about the monarchy, religion), and a series of songs and sonnets collected in the volume Caelica (1633).

Known as the biographer of his friend poet Philip Sidney (Life of the Renowned Sir Philip Sidney, 1652). A collection of his works published by Grosart (in 4 volumes, London, 1871).

In his poems he expressed distinct Calvinist views on art, literature, beauty, and other philosophical questions.
