Offline blog

Blog window

A standalone blog is a blog published by a private individual , group of persons or organization , the software and contents of which are managed by its owner, and not by third parties (Internet services that provide the site and functionality of their engine specifically for blogs ). See Blog, technical background .

Advantages and disadvantages

The benefits of a standalone blog usually include the following:

  • Full control of the owner of the blog over its contents ;
  • The ability to technologically develop your blog as you like and in any direction;
  • The design of the blog is also entirely in the hands of its owner;
  • The results of commercial activities ( monetization of blog traffic ) are 100% owned by the owner;
  • The development and fate of the blog is limited solely by the imagination and capabilities of the owner.

The disadvantages of a standalone blog compared to blogs on shared blog platforms are:

  • Less social connectivity - see social networks ;
  • Higher requirements for the level of technical knowledge of the owner (knowledge of the basics of HTML , etc.);
  • Higher probability of temporary unavailability of the blog due to a technical malfunction or hosting policy;
  • Hosting fee and (sometimes) engine, maintenance and software, if hosting / colocation is used, or traffic payment if the blog is located on the blog owner’s own server (platform).

These features determine the specifics of the choice of this or that solution: as a rule, newcomers to the Web start blogs on blog platforms , and then, "matured", gaining a variety of experience (both technical and network communication experience), go "free" - starting own blog.

Vadim Artamonov ( Webplanet ) notes two opposite trends in the development of the blogosphere : “On the one hand, users get stuck in flocks ( community ) on blog platforms , and on the other they leave the community for“ solo swimming ”... A good analogue will probably be „ Village vs. the farm . " On the farm you can only rely on yourself and your strengths - but you can do anything you want (within reason). As a minus - a lack of social ties. ”
