Biography

Representative of a family of French musicians and composers. The father of Francois-Andre (1726-1795), composer and chess player, and composer Anne Danican Filodorov (1681-1728).

In the years 1667-1677 he served as oboe player in the musketeer regiment. He followed the king during his military operations in Flanders and the Spanish Netherlands , participated in the siege of Maastricht , as well as in military campaigns and battles in Alsace and Lorraine .

Since 1677 he studied at the Royal Academy of Music .

Over time, he began to act as an opera musician , flutist , bassoonist and violinist .

Until 1684, he was appointed curator and librarian of the Royal Music Library (Garde de la Bibliothèque de la Musique du Roi). For many years he served in this post. He received the royal privilege to publish his musical compositions.

Until now, the rich, carefully collected collection of Philidor is the foundation of the Musical Library of Versailles and the music collection of the National Library of France. This extensive collection contains court operas, ballets, instrumental music and church music of the 17th century, partly in the form of handwritten copies of Philidor. Over his life, he has collected more than 10,000 manuscript volumes that have not yet been printed, including almost all of Lully's works and Delaland music.
