Biography
He began to give concerts at the age of nine, in 1913 made a European tour. Since 1914 he lived in the USA, gave concerts, studied with Franz Kneisel .
Since 1916 , the first violin of the Berkshire String Quartet. In 1921 he founded his own String Quartet of Gordon . In the same year he became accompanist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra - the youngest in the history of the band. In 1930 , the tour program of the Gordon quartet became so saturated that Gordon had to abandon his work in the orchestra. At the same time, he founded the Fall Mountain Village (Connecticut) summer music school Music Mountain, dedicated mainly to the chamber ensemble. In 1936 - 1938 Gordon was the musical director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra . Since 1941 , he taught at the Eastman School of Music , under the patronage of which his quartet also passed. After the death of Gordon, his collection of notes, consisting mainly of works for string ensembles, was transferred to the University of Rochester .
There is a famous episode during the Great Depression when Gordon, wishing to check whether serious art retains attractive power, went out to play on the street under the guise of a wandering violinist and raised $ 5.61 [1] . More than 70 years later, this experiment was repeated by Joshua Bell .
