Hackney, Roger

Roger Graham Hackney ( born September 2, 1957 , Swansea ) is a British Welsh athlete who specializes in cross-country and 3000m hurdling . He played at major international competitions in the period 1979-1990, the silver medalist of the European Cup, the winner of the silver medal of the Games of the Commonwealth of Nations, a participant in the three summer Olympic Games.

Biography

Roger Hackney was born on September 2, 1957 in Swansea , Wales . He trained at the track and field club Aldershot, Farnham and District in Farnborough , continued to train while serving in the Royal Air Force of Great Britain .

In 1979, he first performed at the World Cross-country Championships in Limerick , took 153 place in the individual competition. A year later, at similar competitions in Paris, it was already 62nd.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow - in the 3000m hurdle race he reached the semi-finals stage and was located on the 13th line in the final protocol of the competition [1] .

In 1981, at the World Cross Championship in Madrid, he took the 126th place in the individual event.

He represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane: he took fourth place in the steeplechase and eleventh place in the 5000 meters race. I visited the European Championships in Athens , where I showed 21 times in the 3000m hurdle race. At the same time, at the World Cross-Country Championship in Rome, he was 103rd.

In 1983, at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki, he had good chances of being among the winners - he reached the finals and finished fifth in the decisive race [2] .

Being among the leaders of the track and field team of Great Britain, he successfully qualified for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles - this time reached the finals and ultimately closed the top ten [3] .

In 1986, he won a silver medal in the steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, losing only to the representative of Canada Graham Fell in the final (there were still not many African favorites, primarily Kenyan ones, who boycotted the Games due to sports cooperation government of Margaret Thatcher from South Africa, where the policy of apartheid was carried out) [4] . In addition, he started at the European Championships in Stuttgart , where he showed the eighth time at the finish line.

He won the Silver Dignity Award at the 1987 European Cup in Prague , passing ahead of the Italian Francesco Panetta . At the same time, at the world championship in Rome, he took 14th place.

In 1988, together with the British national team, Hackney went to run at the Olympic Games in Seoul - he overcame the quarterfinals stage here, but did not finish in the semifinal [5] . He ran a 12-kilometer distance at the world championship in cross-country in Auckland , becoming the thirteenth. In the same year, at competitions in Belgium, he set his personal best in 3000 km hurdles, showing a time of 8: 18.91.

At the 1989 World Cross-Country Championship in Stavanger did not finish.

The last time showed any significant result on the international scene in the 1990 season, when he visited the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand - he took seventh place in the steeplechase and fourteenth in the 5000 meters race.

After completing his sports career, he worked as an orthopedic surgeon in Leeds [6] .
