Biography

Born in an educated poor family of nobles in the village of Pankeevo , located on the left bank of the Wablya river, in the Lgovsky district of Kursk province . At the source of the Volzhin family was Bogdan Evstafievich Volzhin, who owned estates in Kolomenskoye district in 1577. The progeny of Bogdan Evstafievich Volzhin was recorded in the 6th part of the Genealogy book of the Kursk province. Valerian's father played the violin and piano, he knew literature well. In addition to Valerian, his elder brother Alexander was in the family, who was musically gifted and composed music. From nine years old Valerian wrote poetry. After the death of his father, Valerian entered the preparatory courses of the Kursk Gymnasium , which he successfully graduated from among the best students. Then he entered the medical faculty of Moscow University , but immediately transferred to the law faculty of the same university; Among his teachers were well-known professors B. N. Chicherin , S. M. Soloviev , N. I. Krylov and others. After graduation, Volzhin joined the Oryol District Court. For a short time Valerian Alexandrovich held district court posts. March 3, 1872 Volzhin was accepted as a candidate for a judicial position at the prosecutor of the Penza district court, served as secretary at the prosecutor. On August 21, 1873, Valerian Aleksandrovich was approved by the judicial investigator of the 1st section of the Penza district. March 24, 1881 he received the rank of court adviser . March 10, 1882 Volzhin became a member of the Penza District Court. In the same year, he became an employee of the journalist “ Criminologist ”, where he published his first articles related to his judicial practice. Valerian Alexandrovich began to collaborate with other magazines, but difficulties arose here. The Observer magazine , received the story “Babi Club” from Volzhin, was ready to print it, but did not. Editor Pyatkovsky explained his refusal by the fact that "the gendarme colonel was ridiculously withdrawn." In 1891 Volzhin published his first book, “Pictures from the Judicial Life,” in the printing house of A. Muchnik. In 1893 his book of short stories “Our Tulupovtsy” was published. In 1894, the journal “Observer” published Volzhin's novel “The Mother Criminal”, she was a great success with readers. One of the judicial figures of that time, however, the judicial figure A.F. Oettinger raised dissatisfaction with this composition, in his opinion, he was presented in this story in a not quite attractive form. In this story, Valerian Alexandrovich Volzhin anticipated some elements of the plot of Leo Tolstoy ’s novel “Resurrection” , written in 1899. Volzhin was an employee of the Judicial Newspaper , published in the Legal Chronicle , the Legal Journal , and the Legal Newspaper . In the autobiographical story “Before the Epoch of Liberation” Valerian Alexandrovich talks about the life of his small noble family, shows his life, the relationship of landowners and peasants, describes his childhood, in the pages of this work the author writes about his talented brother Alexander, a self-taught composer who wrote more than 300 romances, but failed to publish them. In 1902, he received the rank of State Councilor . In 1904, he became a member of the Omsk Court of Justice. In 1910, one of Volzhin’s critical articles in the Siberian Echoes newspaper caused open dissatisfaction with Justice Minister I. G. Shcheglovity , for this reason Volzhin left service in Omsk and returned to Penza. In Penza, he again held judicial posts, became a full member of the Penza provincial statistical committee and the scientific archival commission.
