Biography
Born in 1843 in Friedrichstadt of the Province of Courland (now Jaunjelgava , Latvia). Early began to translate Russian poets into German, as well as writing poems on their own. [four]
In 1881 he went to America with the aim of founding Jewish agricultural colonies there, which he devoted several years of his life to. At one time, he published the magazine Der Jüdischer Farmer. [four]
In 1892, on the instructions of the railway company, he went on an expedition to study the economic conditions of China, Japan and Korea, and in 1893 published a report on this trip. [four]
From 1898 he held the position of librarian in the Slavic branch of the New York Public Library . Together with Singer, he organized the Russian department in preparing the publication of the 12-volume Jewish encyclopedia in English " Jewish Encyclopedia " (ed. "Funk and Wagnalls Company", 1901-1906) and since December 1900 headed this department. [four]
He published a magazine in the Hebrew language - “Ha-Modia le-Chodaschim” [4] .
