Biography

Born in Armavir (father Ivan Petrovich, - lawyer; mother, Maria Nikolaevna, - doctor). After graduating from high school, he entered the military school, with the rank of junior lieutenant went to the front in the 4th Air Army. Participated in hostilities on the Taman Peninsula in the Kerch region, then on the Belorussian Front and in Poland. As a result of the war, he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the II degree, the medal " For Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War ."

In 1948 he entered the art history department of the history department of Moscow State University . He graduated with honors, after which 10 years he worked in the Pushkin Museum. A.S. Pushkin . Subsequently, Gleb Ivanovich strongly advised his students to visit this museum. He worked in archaeological expeditions, since 1949 he participated in excavations in the territory of the Bosporus kingdom , studied materials in the museums of Crimea. The result of these field seasons were the books: “Antique Black Sea (1973); “The Art of the Kingdom of Bosporus (1999) and“ Olbia and Chersonesos ”(1999). Sokolov was occupied by the Greek city-states as a cultural phenomenon.

In 1964 he defended his thesis on "A sculptural portrait of the time of Antoninov in the museums of the USSR", he began working at Moscow State University at the Department of Art History.

Professor, Department of Foreign Art, Faculty of History (1999). At Moscow University, he gave lecture courses: “The Art of Ancient Greece ”, “The Art of Ancient Rome ”; special course "Art of the Northern Black Sea Region "; led a seminar and a special seminar on the art of antiquity.

In 1990 he became a doctor of art history (the topic of his doctoral dissertation was “The Art of Ancient Rome and the Roman Sculptural Portrait of the 3rd Century.”)
