Singer, Isidore

Biography

Isidor Singer was born in 1859 in Weiskirchen ( Moravia ) [4] .

After graduating from the Faculty of Philosophy in Vienna in 1884, he founded the journal Allgemeine Oesterreichische Literaturzeitung, which he terminated in 1887, when Singer took the place of secretary and librarian of the French ambassador in Vienna, Count Foucher de Carey [4] .

After traveling with the Count to Paris in 1891, Singer was appointed one of the editors of the press bureau under the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in 1893 began to publish the newspaper La Vraie Libre Parole, whose task was to fight The famous anti-Semite Drumont ; at first the newspaper caused a stir, but soon began to lose its significance. In 1895, Singer went to New York and decided to publish The Encyclopedia of the History and Mental Evolution of the Jewish Race (Encyclopedia of History and Mental Evolution of the Jewish Race); subsequently, he realized his intention in the form of the publication The Jewish Encyclopedia (1901-1906), which formed the basis of the Russian Jewish Encyclopedia of Brockhaus and Efron (1908-1913). As the CEO of Singer and Co., Singer published, in addition to Jewish Encyclopedia, International Insurance Encyclopedia, Who's Who in Insurance, and several other references [4] .

As a publicist, Singer was very prolific and spoke on various issues, most of all against anti-Semitism . Jewish Studies [4] :

  • “Russia et the bar of the american people” (1904) - a description of the Chisinau pogrom and the attitude of American society to it;
  • "Jacob H. Schiff and the Zionists - Rabbi and Pope", 1907;
  • The Jews and Jesus, 1908.

In addition to works on Jewry, Singer wrote several more works on political and pedagogical topics, for example [4] :

  • "La prestige de la France", 1889;
  • "Die beiden Elektren - humanistische Bildung und der klassische Unterricht."
