Biography

Isaac Blaser was born in Vilna in 1837 [4] .

From 1864 to 1878 he held the post of spiritual rabbi in St. Petersburg , then moved to Kovno (center of the Coven province of the Russian Empire; now Kaunas ), where he became the head of the local Yeshibot and founded by Rabbi Israel Salanter and Rabbi Yitzhak-Elkhanan Spector [5] of the central box office for " parushim ”- individuals who are fully committed to the study of religious writing [4] .

To finance the box office, Blaser sent special commissioners to all countries (“ Meshulakhim ”). As a zealot and preacher of the teachings of the mussarniks , Blaser, taking advantage of the right granted to him to determine the amount of subsidies issued by the Parush, supported those who were inclined to mussarism. This caused discontent among the Parush and Yeshibotniks, who did not join this teaching, as a result of which the cashier’s founder, Rabbi Yitzhak-Elkhanan, removed Blazer from her. [four]

Then Blaser founded an independent cash desk for the paraushim-mussarniks, and he and his followers managed to convince the Berlin philanthropist Lachmann to transfer to their disposal a foundation he founded to support people preparing for rabbinical activity [4] .

To spread musarism, Blaser preached in chapels and at home. After the death of Rabbi Yitzhak-Elkhanan (March 1896 [5] ), the debate between the adherents of the mussar and his opponents took in Kovna and its suburbs Slobodka (the main center of the mussars, see yeshiva " Sloboda " ) extremely ugly forms, and when following this about the rabbinical meeting, nine prominent rabbis issued an appeal “Lemaan Daat” against the mussarniks, Blazer in his response (Hameliz, 1897, No. 167) stated that “ everything published by the rabbis contradicts the Torah ”. Blaser’s harsh response, which did not include any weighty objections to the charges raised by the rabbis, further aggravated the relationship. The struggle against the mussarniks intensified, and Blaser moved to Vilna , and from there to Kelmy (1898). There he wrote the book Or Israel (1900), dedicated to the teachings of the Mussar and its founder Salanter. [four]

In 1902, Blaser emigrated to Palestine. He died in Jerusalem in 1906. [four]
