Biography
In his youth he studied playing the violin, while studying law in Havana . In 1925 - 1927 studied composition in Paris with Nadi Boulanger . Upon his return to Cuba, he was a violinist in various Havana orchestras, conducted his own small orchestra, which for the first time performed the works of Debussy , Ravel , de Falla , Gershwin in Cuba. Garcia Caturla's composer work is based on the use of Afro-Cuban folklore material. Of particular interest is his opera Manita en el suelo ( 1934 - 1937 ; the libretto by Alejo Carpentier ), conceived for staging in the puppet theater; in 1985 , the opera was first staged in Cuba.
