Biography
Born in a large family of a musician- organist of a local church.
He received his first music lessons from his father, then in Lübeck from Johann Paul Kunzen. At the age of 19, I.G. Mutel became a chamber musician, organist and harpsichordist at the court of the Duke Christian Ludwig II of Mecklenburg-Schwerinsky .
In 1750, having received a year's vacation, he went to Leipzig to complete his musical studies and improve in terms of playing and composition under the guidance of Johann Sebastian Bach . While in Leipzig, he not only showed him his own compositions, but also had the opportunity to familiarize himself with Bach's unpublished works and copy them. Copying the works of great masters was then considered a good professional school. Despite the fact that Bach died three months after his arrival, I.G. Mutel is considered a student of the great composer.
On Bach’s advice, he later visited Hamburg - Dresden - Potsdam , where he met and met musicians whom his teacher appreciated. Among them, George Philippe Telemann , Johann Adolf Hasse and Karl Philippe Emanuel Bach , court harpsichord player Frederick the Great .
In 1753, he accepted the offer to take the position of bandmaster of the Russian nobleman I.F. Fitingof and moved to Riga. It was there that in 1756 his first works were published.
He also served as a conductor. From 1767 to 1788, he was an organist at St. Peter's Church in Riga .
A virtuoso of keyboard musical instruments , Johann Gottfried Mütel left ten concerts for harpsichord , a concert for two bassoons and string instruments, a sonata for harpsichord and organ music. He is believed to be the author of the Sonata in D minor children's sonata , BWV 964 , attributed to Bach.
