Chambéry ( fr. Chambéry [ʃɑ̃.be.ʁi] , francop . Chambèri ) - the main city of the French department of Savoy in the southern Alps with a population of 61 thousand inhabitants (2005); 9 km south of Lake Bourget , in a picturesque valley surrounded by mountains; university city; has its own airport; located at an altitude of 270 m above sea level. Not far from Chambery are the regional nature parks “Massif de Beauguis” ( French ) and “Massif de la Chartreuse” ( French ).

History
The first settlement on this site has been known since Roman times and was called Lemencum .
In the eleventh century, Chambery is referred to as Camberiacum ; in the XII-XIII centuries it is a special county.
In 1232 it was annexed to Savoy, becoming the residence of the Dukes of Savoy .
In the XV-XVIII centuries, Chambery was repeatedly occupied by the French ; in 1792 it was annexed to the French Republic and until 1815 was the main city of the Mont Blanc department . At the Vienna Congress, Chambery was returned to the House of Savoy ; in 1860 it was again annexed to France .
