Denmark at the 2018 Winter Olympics

Denmark was represented by 17 athletes in 3 sports at the 2018 Winter Olympics . The Danish team did not have just one athlete to repeat their own record for the number of participants set at the 2010 Games in Vancouver . At the opening ceremony of the Games, the right to fly the national flag was entrusted to skater Elena Rigas [1] , and at the closing ceremony - to skater Viktor Hald Torup [2] , who took 5th place in the mass start at the Games in Pyeongchang. For the fifth time in a row, Danish athletes failed to win medals at the Winter Olympics. The only Danish medal at the Winter Games was won in 1998 at the Nagano Games, where the women's curling team won silver medals [3] .

Skating Sports

  Speed Skating

Compared to previous Games, a number of changes have occurred in the speed skating program. Competitions in the mass start were added, where athletes will need to overcome 16 laps, with three intermediate finishes, the points earned on which will help in the distribution of places, starting from the 4th [12] . Also, for the first time since 1994, skaters will run a distance of 500 meters only once [13] . The distribution of quotas was based on the results of the first four stages of the World Cup [14] . Based on their results, a consolidated qualification list was formed [15] , according to which the Danish team won 3 Olympic licenses in men's and women's mass starts [16] . On December 19, the Danish National Olympic Committee approved three skaters who will be kicked out at the Pyeongchang Games [5] .

  Figure Skating

Most of the Olympic licenses for the 2018 Games were distributed according to the results of the athletes' performance at the 2017 World Cup [17] . Following its results, the Danish team was able to win one license in ice dancing [18] , which was made possible thanks to the 13th place of Lawrence Fournier-Baudry and Nikolai Sørensen . To participate in the Fournier-Baudry Winter Olympics, it was necessary to obtain a special permission from the IOC, since she did not have Danish citizenship, which did not prevent her from competing in competitions under the auspices of the FIS. However, in July 2017, the IOC refused the skater [19] , which is why the Danish Olympic Committee decided to abandon the quota, which passed to Slovakia [18] .

Cross-country skiing

  Alpine skiing

Qualification of athletes for participation in the Olympic Games was carried out on the basis of the FIS special qualification rating as of January 21, 2018 [20] . At the same time, the NOC for participation in the Olympic Games could choose only the athlete who entered the top 500 Olympic rating in his discipline, and at the same time had a certain number of points, according to the qualification table [21] . Countries that did not have participants among the 500 strongest athletes could only apply for category “B” quotas in technical disciplines [21] . As a result of the qualification selection, the Danish team won 2 Olympic licenses of category “A”, but then refused the quota in women's competitions [22] , and after redistributing it received another quota for men.

Qualification of athletes for participation in the Olympic Games was carried out on the basis of the FIS special qualification rating as of January 21, 2018 [23] . To obtain an Olympic category “A” license, athletes needed to score a maximum of 100 points in the FIS distance rating [24] . Moreover, each NOC can apply for the Games 1 man and 1 woman, if they have met the qualification criterion “B”, according to which they can take part in sprint and races of 10 km for women or 15 km for men [24] . According to the results of the qualification selection, the Danish team won the men's Olympic license of category “A” [25] , thanks to the successful performances of Martin Möller [26] .

  Freestyle

Compared to previous Games, changes have occurred in the halfpipe and slopestyle. Now, in the finals of these disciplines, freestylers began to make three attempts [27] [28] , while the final position of the athletes is still determined by the result of the best of them. Qualification of athletes for participation in the Olympic Games was carried out on the basis of the FIS special qualification rating as of January 21, 2018 [29] . For each discipline, certain conditions were established by fulfilling which athletes could qualify for joining the national team to participate in the Olympic Games [30] . According to the results of the qualification selection, the Danish team was not able to win any of the Olympic licenses, but after redistributing it received a quota in the female halfpipe [31] .
