Ionian Islands [4] [5] ( Greek Περιφέρεια Ιονίων Νήσων [3] ) is the periphery , the administrative-territorial unit of Greece . It is a regional body of local government and part of the administrative division .

In 2011, according to the Kallikratis program , it was included in the decentralized administration of the Peloponnese, Western Greece and the Ionian Islands [6] .
Includes the Ionian Islands (with the exception of the remote part - the island of Kythira and a number of nearby to the south of the Peloponnese ). In total, the periphery consists of 32 islands, of which only 14 are inhabited: Andipaxi , Zakynthos , Ithaca , Kalamos , Kastos , Kerkyra , Kefalonia , Paxi , Otoni , Lefkas , Matrakion , Meganision , Erikus and Strofades Islands [2] .
The population is 207,855 inhabitants at the 2011 census [3] . The area is 2306.93 km² [1] . The density of 90.1 people / km² [3] . The administrative center of the periphery is Kerkyra . From September 1, 2014, the peripheryarch is Theodoros Galiatsatos ( Θεόδωρος Γαλιατσάτος ).
Established in 1987 in accordance with Law 1622/86 on Local Government. The periphery includes the noma Zakynthos , Kerkyra , Kefalonia and Lefkada .
