Men's road bike "Progress" B-110

"Progress" B-110 is a men's road bike manufactured by the Kharkov Bicycle Plant . Years of production 1950-1958. [1] The first unified bicycle, which was produced by several bicycle factories of the USSR.

General information

After the Second World War, the work of the bicycle factory was resumed in Kharkov.

The production base of the enterprise was replenished with equipment and machine tools of bicycle factories exported from Germany as military reparations . The first mass production of the new enterprise in were B-14, B-27 bicycles, female models V-22, V-25, and sports-road B-51 were created according to German models. [1] At the beginning of the 1950s, at the Central Design Bureau of the Velostroyka Kharkov Bicycle Plant, the standard model of the Progress B-110 men's road bike was developed and launched, which set the main tendency for the development of road bikes in the USSR for many years to come. Subsequently, this model was produced by almost all bicycle factories of the Soviet Union.

Bicycle Design

Closed bike frame brazed from steel pipes. Rigid fork, conventional design. The pedal carriage (such as Tompson), the pedal levers were fastened with a locking wedge. Prefabricated pedals, stamped from steel, chrome plated with rubber inserts. Wheel rims steel (with a profile "gull") chrome or painted. Tire size 40 × 622 mm (28 "). The rear wheel was equipped with a Torpedo- type brake hub.

The saddle with a thick leather cover is equipped with two coil springs. A stamped chrome plate with the inscription "Kharkov" was attached to its rear part of the KhVZ model. Bicycles were painted black, but a certain amount were blue-green, dark red and other colors. The frame, wings and wheels were decorated with rulers . A color decal depicting the emblem of a bicycle factory was applied on the rear wing. On the frame, under the stencil, paint was applied decorative strips and the inscription "B-110" and "Progress".

On the steering column, brass stamped emblem of the KhVZ bicycle plant (or another) was riveted.
On the rear wing was installed a bicycle circular reflector with ruby-colored glass.
Progress B-110 bicycles were available for sale as standard, which included a stamped trunk, an purse with tools, a bicycle kit, a pump and a bell. In addition, it was proposed to purchase a mileage counter, headlight and dynamo. On some models, a chain guard was installed.
On all models of HVZ B-110 bicycles, the serial number and year of manufacture were stamped on the seatpost assembly of the frame.

Interesting Facts

  • The Progress bicycle was produced for a certain time at the GAZ [2] and ZIS / ZIL [3] automobile plants, ZhVZ.
  • Given the standard uniform angle of the frame pipe above the pedal carriage of the Progress B-110 bicycles, the auxiliary gas engine D-4 was developed at the Central Design Bureau of the Velostroy Kharkov Bicycle Plant [4] . Thus, the engine was easily mounted on the models of all plants without any special development of the bicycle design.
