List of Detroit Red Wings Head Coaches

Scotty Bowman - head coach of the club from 1993 to 2002

Below is a list of the head coaches of the NHL hockey club Detroit Red Wings ( Detroit , Michigan , USA ), their statistics and achievements in the club.

Throughout the history of the club since its foundation in 1926, the post of head coach, taking into account the acting, was held by 27 people, and up to the appointment of Jeff Blashill in 2015, they were all representatives of Canada [1] . Thirteen of the coaches in the past played for the Red Wings as players. [2] Nine of the coaches were included in the Hockey Hall of Fame : seven as players ( Abel , Adams , Gadsby , Delvecchio , Keats , Lindsay , Park ) [3] and two as functionaries ( Ivan , Bowman ) [4 ] .

The record holder for his tenure is Adams , who led the franchise team from 1927 to 1947, during which 964 matches were played (during this period the team managed to change its name from Cougars to Falcons, and later to Red Wings ) Under the leadership of Adams, the club for the first time in its history managed to win the Stanley Cup in 1936 [5] . In just twenty years of his management, the club six times participated in the final series of the Stanley Cup and won the main trophy three times, Adams also holds a record for the number of defeats of the team - 339 matches. In honor of this coach, who spent his entire coaching career at the Red Wings, the annual trophy awarded to the best coach of the season in the NHL - Jack Adams Eward , is named. Among the trainers who headed the Red Wings, three received this individual prize ( Kromm , Demer and Bowman), and only Demer managed to win it twice [6] .

Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup 11 times, with three coaches — Adams, Ivan and Bowman — winning the trophy three times as head coach, once to Skinner and Babcock . The club came the most times to a common victory in the regular season under the leadership of Tommy Ivan, who won it for six consecutive seasons (from the season 1948/1949 to 1953/1954 ) [7] . The largest number of victories in regular season matches (458) was won by a team led by Mike Babcock [8] , and the highest percentage of victories relative to the total number of games was recorded during the temporary execution of the functions of the head coach with the tandem of Barry Smith and Dave Lewis (80.00%) [9] .
