The main attraction of the park is Lassen Peak , the largest volcano with a lava cone in the world and the most southeastern volcano in the Cascade Mountains . The park began as two independent national monuments founded by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1907: the Cinder Cone National Monument and the Lassen Peak National Monument .
The source of volcanic activity in Lassen is the shift of the North California tip of the Gorda tectonic plate under the North American plate . Continued geothermal activity in the vicinity of Lassen Peak is represented by mud boilers , fumaroles and hot springs. Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of the few places where all four types of volcanoes are located ( lava cone , slag cone , shield volcano and stratovolcano ).
