Port Street [1] is one of the oldest streets of the city of Magadan, which arose in 1932 as a continuation of the Kolyma Highway leading towards Nagaev Bay . The name of the street was given by the first berth of the Magadan seaport built at the same time.

The first four houses, located at the beginning (historical part) of the street, were built in 1954, commissioned by the regional committee and regional executive committee of the newly formed Magadan Region for party leaders of their families (in 1953).
On March 4, 1960, on the Portovaya Street, the Northeastern Integrated Research Institute (NWCRII) was founded, which became the first academic institute in the North-East of the country. Today, the Institute is still solving scientific problems in the field of archeology, history, geology and geophysics.
Decree of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR No. 1761 dated November 22, 1960 in Magadan at Portovaya 13, established the Magadan State Pedagogical Institute (MGPI), later transformed into the Northern International University (1992) and, later, into Northeastern State University (2007 g).
