Pelesyan, Artavazd Ashotovich

Artavazd (Arthur) Peleshyan was born on February 22, 1938 in Leninakan (now Gyumri).

In 1963-1968 he studied at the directing department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography ( VGIK ), in the workshop of L. M. Christie . Already his student works, filmed at VGIK ("Land of People" in 1966, "Beginning" in 1967), won many international prizes.

Later he substantiated his own theory and practice of film editing - “ remote editing ”.

In A. Peleshyan’s films, feature films are combined with documentary shots. All films of Peleshyan, without exception, received many awards in Russia and abroad.

He is the author of a number of theoretical works on cinema, which are collected in the book “My Cinema”.

Books about his work were published in Italy, Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, and South Korea. In France, the book “Artavazd Peleshyan. Symphony of the world. " Films about Peleshyan were created in Holland, in Russia, in Italy, in France.

Artavazd Peleshyan taught directing skills at many universities and film schools:

• at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Television and Radio Broadcasting Workers of the USSR, at the advanced courses of screenwriters and directors at the Institute of USSR Goskino (Moscow),
• in film academies of FAMU (Prague), FEMIS (Paris), film university (Mexico City).

He is an honorary doctor and professor at two state universities:

• Yerevan State Institute of Theater and Cinema ,
• Russian-Armenian (Slavic) University .

He worked in Belarusfilm, in Armenfilm, at the Gorky studio, at Mosfilm, in the Center for Scientific Studies in Moscow, worked on a film in Paris for the Fondation Cartie and ZTKM in Karlsruhe (Germany).

Member of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia. Member of SCAM France (1991).

In 2015, the Artavazd Pelesyan honorary plaque was opened at the Lumiere Brothers Museum in Leon, France.

• State Prize of the Armenian SSR (1985, for the film "Our Century").
• The first prize of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR (1987, "For theoretical and literary works included in the book" My Cinema "and reflecting the unique creative experience of the development of cinematic thought").
• Honored Artist of the Russian Federation (06/07/1996) ^[4] .
• Order of St. Mesrop Mashtots (1996).
• SCAM Grand Prix “for contribution to world cinema” ( France , 2000).
• Russian national award in the field of non-fiction film and television "Laurus" (2003).
• People's Artist of the Republic of Armenia (2004).
• “Golden Apricot” Yerevan Film Festival Sergei Parajanov Prize “For Contribution to World Cinema” (2006).
• CIS Interstate Prize “Commonwealth Stars” (2012) for a major contribution to achievements in the field of science and art. The prize was presented by the Chairman of the Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Valentina Ivanovna Matvienko .
• Commemorative Medal of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia (2012).
• Yerice Luys Award of the Armenian Church (2013). The award was presented by the Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II .
• International Film Festival in Yoglovo (Czech Republic) "for his contribution to world cinema" (2015).
• Honorary Citizen of Yerevan (2017).
