Biography
Born in the family of composer Aaron Avshalomov , who settled in China with his American wife. Got his first music lessons from his father. After leaving school, he worked at a factory for four years, then helped his father in staging his ballet in Shanghai, served in the American military corps in China for a short time , and finally moved to the United States in 1937 (since 1944 - an American citizen). He studied in Los Angeles with Ernst Toch , then at Reed College with Jacques Gershkovich and finally at the Eastman School of Music under Bernard Rogers , he also studied under the guidance of Aaron Copland .
In 1946 - 1954 taught at Columbia University . With a university orchestra, he performed the American premiere of Anton Bruckner’s Mass No. 1. In 1954 - 1994 led the Portland Youth Philharmonic Orchestra , replacing his teacher Gershkovich and giving a total of 640 concerts [3] . The merits of the Avshalomov conductor were noted by the Ditson Prize ( 1965 ) - the oldest American award for conductors.
In the creative heritage of Avshalomov, the most significant place is occupied by orchestral works, including the Oregon Symphony on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Oregon . He also owns chamber and choral works.
