Eletsk Lace in the 19th Century

The first drawings for lace patterns were brought from Europe - from Germany, Belgium and France, but soon local artists and their original style appeared.

Yelets lace has been known in Russia since the end of the 18th century. It was then that here, in Yelets, one of the centers arose where the Russians began to actively master this art that came from Europe. The first certificate of lace is dated 1801, as evidenced by the stitch on a towel with the inscription: "the deacon of Alexander Ivanov sewed this board in 1801." The lace on this towel is made of linen and mesh. The grid is most often used in the Yelets lace. [one]

Lace is characterized by a soft contrast of a small pattern (floral and geometric) and a delicate openwork background.
