History
In 1907, while touring Europe, King Chulalongkorn visited the Palace of Versailles in France and was impressed by the Equestrian Statue of King Louis XIV . He had the idea to erect a similar statue in Bangkok. The King’s wishes came to Crown Prince Vachiravud , who, after consulting with his ministers, proposed to equip the king’s equestrian statue with public donations in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the King’s rise.
Following the approval of Chulalongkorn, Prince Charlosak Kridakar, the Siamese ambassador in France, was commissioned to find a suitable foundry for casting the sculpture. Foundry found. It was a factory at Susse Frères in Paris . The plant had experience in such work.
Two well-known French sculptors Clovis-Edmond Masson (Clovis-Edmond Masson) and Georges Saulo (Georges Saulo) were responsible for the work. On August 22, 1907, Chulalongkorn went to the Susse Frères foundry. There in 1906 an equestrian figure was cast for the equestrian statue of the Spanish king Alfonso XIII . She was converted into a statue for the Siamese king. By 1908, the equestrian statue of King Chulalongkorn was cast and sent to Siam. On November 11, 1908, she arrived at the port of Bagcock.
The budget of the statue was estimated at about 200,000 baht. About 1,200,000 baht was collected for the construction of the monument. The king intended to spend the remaining money at his discretion, but Chulalongkorn died on October 23, 1910. His successor, King Wachiravud, used the remaining amount to build a university in Bangkok, named after Chulalongkorn.
