Career
Lucas was an R&B and jazz guitarist at the beginning of his career. In the early 1970s, he played with Billy Paul , and from 1972 to 1976 with Miles Davis [3] . It was an electric group, which also included Pete Cossay , Michael Henderson and Al Foster . In the band, Lucas met the percussionist James Mtume] , his future production partner. In 1976, both musicians joined the group of singer Roberta Flack and toured with her for several years.
After completing his work as a jazz touring guitarist, Lucas switched to songwriting and producing. His work in this field received fame and positive reviews from critics. Initially, he was part of a production team - together with percussionist James Mtume. Together they wrote and produced several hits for artists such as Stephanie Mills , Phyllis Hyman , Lou Rolls , The Spinners and Robert Flack [4] .
In 1980, Lucas and Mtume received a Grammy for the best song in the R&B style for the song “ Never Knew Love Like This Before ” performed by Stephanie Mills [5] .
In the late 1970s, Lucas decided to start a solo performing, producing and authoring career. In 1978, he recorded his own instrumental album, Survival Themes . He produced the single “Young Free and Single” as a member of the rapidly disintegrated band Sunfire, whose album was released in 1982. One of his first works as a solo producer was Madonna's debut album. In addition to arranging most of the tracks, he wrote two songs for the album - “ Borderline ” and “Physical Attraction” [6] . After this collaboration ended, Lucas worked with Ribby Jackson , Randy Crawford and The Four Tops .
In 1986, Lucas founded a recording studio in Jersey City called Quantum Sound [7] . It recorded Pet Shop Boys , Jodeci , Jeff Buckley and Sepultura .
