An annual herbaceous plant 30 - 70 cm high. The stem is branched, covered with glandular hairs at the top. Leaves are lanceolate, small above. Inflorescence is a thick brush ; flowers on thick pedicels . The calyx is yellowish - hairy, divided into ovoid lobes. Corolla light purple or whitish, 20-30 mm long. It blooms from June to September. The fruit is a box 12–17 mm long, with mesh-wrinkled seeds [3] .
The diploid set of chromosomes is 2n = 16 [4] .

It lives in Southern Europe ( France , Portugal , Spain , Malta , Croatia ), North Africa ( Libya , Tunisia , Morocco ) and East Asia ( Cyprus , Israel , Lebanon , Turkey ) [5] .
Grown as an ornamental plant. Many varieties with lavender, orange, pink, yellow or white flowers have been bred [6] .
Under this taxonomic name was described in 1753 by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in the work Species plantarum [7] . It is a typical species of the genus [8] .
