Thailand Visa Policy

Thai visa issued to an Iranian citizen.

To enter the territory of Thailand, citizens must obtain a visa on one of the Thai diplomatic missions , if they are not from a country exempted from the visa regime, or a country whose citizens are entitled to obtain a visa upon arrival [1] .

Currently, Thailand offers a visa-free regime for citizens of 57 countries [2] . The Thai government has bilateral visa-free agreements with some of these countries. Citizens of 21 countries can obtain a visa upon arrival.

Citizens of 21 countries can apply for a visa upon arrival , which allows them to stay for up to 15 days at the main points of entry, whether by air or by land. Visa cannot be extended upon arrival.

The visa fee on arrival was increased from 1000 baht to 2000 baht from September 27, 2016 [7] . From December 1, 2016 to August 31, 2017, the visa fee on arrival was reduced to 1000 baht in order to develop tourism [8] [9] . APEC Business Travel Card

Citizens of the following countries who have APEC Business Travel Cart (ABTC) with “THA” on the back of the card can make visa-free business trips for up to 90 days.

Electronic Visa

Visa Types

Common types of visas

  • “Courtesy Visa”: upon official request, the Royal Thai Embassy may provide visas / passports for diplomats / UN representatives / others who wish to arrive in the Kingdom / or other purposes

  • Type IM: investment with the consent of ministries and departments of Thailand
  • Type M: work of a film producer, journalist or reporter with permission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Type O: family visit; performance of duties, for state enterprises or social organizations (NGOs); receiving medical care; work as a sports coach, as required by the Thai government; be a participant or witness in a lawsuit
  • Type OA: retirement visa
  • Type R: carry out missionary work or other religious activities with the consent of the Thai ministries or relevant government departments
  • Type RS: research management or training or teaching at a research institute
  • Type S: participation in officially recognized sporting events.

Re-Entry Permit

If the holder of any type of visa (except for a visa on arrival) needs to leave the country for a while and his visa does not provide for re-entry into the country, then it is necessary to obtain an additional right to return to the Kingdom before leaving - a special stamp in the passport in addition to the valid visa. Upon returning to Thailand, the permitted period of stay in the country will be the same as before receiving re-entry permite. A single re-entry permit costs 1000 baht, multiple - 3800. This permission can be obtained at any office of the Immigration Service of the Kingdom [18] .

Work Permit

In order to work or conduct business in the Kingdom of Thailand, a category “B” visa holder must obtain a work permit. [19] [20]

One Stop Service Center - Visa and Permit Services

On July 1, 1997, the Visa and Work Permits Center was established in accordance with the regulation promulgated on June 30, 1997, by the Prime Minister’s Office. The goal of this center is to simplify the procedure for issuing visas and permits (for example, a residence permit, a re-entry permit, a work permit) to create a good investment environment.   • A foreign citizen who is the head or specialist of the company, possessing the privileges granted to him by the following laws:
  1. Investment Promotion Act BE 2520 (1977);
 2. Oil Act BE 2514 (1971);
 3. Thailand Industrial Property Law BE 2522 (1979).
  • Foreign citizen who is an investor.
  1. If you invest at least 2 million baht, he or she will be granted permission for 1 year.
 2. If you invest at least 10 million baht, he or she will be granted permission for 2 years.
  • A foreign citizen who is the head or specialist of the company.
  A company associated with a foreigner must have registered capital or assets of at least 30 million baht.
  • A foreign citizen who is a member of the foreign press must submit a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a copy of the identity card issued by the Department of Public Relations.
  • A foreigner who is a researcher or developer in science and technology.
  • A foreign citizen working in a branch of a foreign bank, an office of a foreign bank, a provincial office of a foreign bank, or a representative office of a foreign bank in which all offices are certified by the Bank of Thailand.
  • A foreigner who works on a forced urgent basis for no more than 15 days.
  • A foreign citizen who is an official of the representative office of foreign legal entities in relation to the International Trade Business and the Regional Office of the Transnational Corporation in accordance with the Law on Foreign Business BE 2542 (1999).
  • A foreign citizen who is an expert in the field of information technology.
  • Foreigners who work in the regional operations headquarters.

Persons Denied Entry into Thailand

According to the Thai Immigration Act BE 2522 (1979), foreigners who fall into one of the following categories are prohibited from entering Thailand: [22]

  1. Persons without a valid valid passport or document used in place of a passport. If the passport or document used in place of the passport does not contain a visa issued by the embassies of the Kingdom of Thailand, the Royal Consulates General of the Kingdom of Thailand or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The exceptions are citizens of countries that have concluded with Thailand the relevant visa agreements for the right to obtain a "visa on arrival" or visa-free entry.
  2. Persons without adequate livelihoods after entering the Kingdom. Minimum amount: 600 $ / 20,000 Thai baht for one person; $ 1,200 / 40,000 Thai baht for a family. [23]
  3. Persons who came to the Kingdom of Thailand to work without the necessary documents and visas, violating the Law on work permits for foreigners.
  4. Persons who are mentally unstable or have any diseases specified in the Ministerial Rules.
  5. Persons who have not been vaccinated against smallpox. Persons who are not vaccinated, or who have not undergone any other medical care for protection against illnesses / who refused the necessary vaccinations from the Immigration Doctor.
  6. Persons serving a prison sentence by a court of Thailand or a lawful court order from a foreign country. The exception is punishment for petty crimes or negligence, or this case is considered as an exception, in accordance with Thai law.
  7. Persons whose behavior may endanger the public / whose arrival may lead to trouble, any violence against the world, threatens the security of public order or the security of the nation / being detained by the competent authorities of foreign governments.
  8. If there is reason to be sure that a person enters Thailand to engage in prostitution, trafficking in women or children, drug smuggling or other types of smuggling that are contrary to public morality.
  9. Persons are not allowed to enter if there is no money or bonds provided by the Ministry in accordance with Section 14 of the Immigration Act BE 2522 (1979).
  10. Persons banned from entering by the Minister in accordance with Section 16 of the Immigration Act BE 2522 (1979).
  11. If the person has been deported by the Thai government or by the government of other countries / the person has been revoked the right to stay in the Kingdom by the Thai government or by a foreign government / the person has been expelled from the Kingdom of Thailand by competent officials at the expense of the Thai government. Exceptions are granted by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs on an individual basis.
