Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Gavrilin ( September 20, 1931 , Efremov , Tula Oblast - November 30, 2014 , Moscow ) - Soviet and Russian sports functionary, military and sports journalist and writer. Biography
He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and the Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the CPSU . He worked in the newspapers Krasnaya Zvezda (headed the department of physical training and sports), Soviet Sport , where he was editor-in-chief. He conducted reports from major all-Union and international competitions, covered the summer and winter Olympic Games , the world and European championships in football and hockey, athletics and swimming.
In 1985, as a curator of chess competitions from the State Sports Committee of the USSR, he made a controversial decision on early termination of the match for the world chess championship Karpov - Kasparov after the 48th game with a score of 5: 3 in favor of Karpov, but without determining the winner - in view of the "depletion of physical and psychological forces ”of the duel participants. According to the testimony of Anatoly Karpov and Nikolai Krogius , Gavrilin could receive an indication of this from a member of the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee, Heydar Aliyev [1] .
Gavrilin wrote about 10 books on a sports theme. In 1984, he was transferred to leadership positions in the USSR Sports Committee (since 1986 the USSR State Committee for Sports), where he held the posts of deputy chairman of the State Committee for Sports, vice-president of the USSR NOC. After his resignation in 1991, he was engaged in sports management at the CSKA sports club, organized an ice theater, which successfully toured in different countries [2] .
Gavrilin was a fan of athletic gymnastics, believed that it should be accessible to all segments of the population and be used for strength training of athletes [3] .
In the book by V. Popov and Y. Felshtinsky “The KGB plays chess” it was mentioned that during the period of work as a correspondent and editor of the department in the newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda, Gavrilin was recruited by the 1st department of the 3rd Main Directorate of the KGB (military counterintelligence) , operative work with Gavrilin was conducted by V. K. Popov, employee of the 3rd department of the 11th department of the Fifth KGB Directorate [4] [5] .
Gavrilin was awarded a number of state awards, diplomas, diplomas.
He led a sporty lifestyle, loved the bath and feast [1] [5] [4] .
He died in Moscow on November 30, 2014. He was buried after cremation at the Kuntsevo cemetery [6] .
