Biography
He graduated from the at the University of Cambridge [3] .
Since 1979 he worked at the British Leather Company, in 1993 he took the position of managing director there. Since 1996 - President of the Association of European Taners [4] .
In 1997, he was first elected as a conservative to the House of Commons from North Shropshire County and later was subsequently re-elected [5] .
In parliament, he belonged to Eurosceptics , was a member of Margaret Thatcher's supporter groups - the Conservative Way Forward and No Turning Back, and was specially involved in agricultural issues. In late 1997, he served as the parliamentary organizer . He supported Ian Duncan Smith in the struggle for party leadership and in 2001 became his parliamentary private secretary, and in November 2003, Michael Howard appointed Paterson junior shadow minister of agriculture [6] .
In 2007, he occupied the post of shadow minister for Northern Ireland affairs in the shadow cabinet of the Conservatives [7] .
On May 11, 2010, David Cameron formed the coalition government of the Conservative and Liberal Democratic Parties following the May 6, 2010 parliamentary elections , in which Paterson received the portfolio of the Minister for Northern Ireland [8] .
On September 4, 2012, Cameron made a cabinet change, making thirteen new appointments, including moving Paterson to the chair of the Minister of the Environment, Food, and Agriculture. [9]
On July 15, 2014, David Cameron made new changes in the government, as a result of which Liz Truss became the new Minister of the Environment, and Paterson received no appointment [10] .
After his resignation, Paterson founded the UK 2020 analytical center , which was associated with the scandal of 2016 - being the president and one of the two directors of the organization, Paterson made business trips around the world at the expense of the company, without disclosing its sponsors. Since he remained a member of parliament, he was required to make this data public [11] .
Being a supporter of Great Britain’s exit from the European Union , in October 2017, along with several like-minded conservatives, he sent a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May , in which he urged to prepare for a break with the EU without concluding trade agreements, in view of the futility of negotiations with Brussels [12] .
Personal life
In 1980, Paterson married Rose Ridley, Viscount Ridley's sister. [13]
