Features of the play.
The play "Beckett. Plays" is based on one-act plays by playwright Samuel Beckett . It includes practically unknown texts in Russia - some were specially translated [1] . These are plays for radio and television, written from 1961 to 1983.
Dmitriy Volkostrelov: “We actually had some cultural countering task. Besides, this author is extremely interesting and important, at that time he was very necessary and remains so. I read in English the playbook“ The Collected Shorter Plays ”, because there were no translations yet, and when I chose, I thought, of course, about the actors we work with for years, and about space. Then I asked Alexander Vartanov to start working on the translations. A little more pieces were originally translated, and we refused some when we realized that and differ from what has been obtained, " [1] .
The play includes texts [2] :
- "Night and dreams" (Nacht und träume)
- "What do you mean where"
- "... only clouds" (translated by Anna Savinykh)
- Sketch for Radio (translated by Anna Savinykh, published in Mark Dadyan’s translation as Sketch for Radio
- "Ghost Trio" (Ghost Trio)
- "Lullaby" or "Rokabay" (Rockabay)
- "Come and Go" (Come and Go)
- "Square"
- "Breath" (Breath)
The production reveals the connection of Dmitry Volkostrelov’s method with the theories of American minimalists (for example, theater critic Aleksey Kisilev directly calls the director in connection with this performance a “minimalist”. [3] the darkness and silence that refers to the practices of the composer John Cage .
Asi Voloshin’s review for Petersburg Theater Journal : “What is such darkness? It’s just sensory deprivation. There is such a method in psychotherapy — when sensations are quenched and something else is called. Volkostrelov brings it to the theater (without explanation, but with motivation - sapienti sat - Beckett also wrote radio plays, but what could be more thorough following the author's aesthetics than a radio play in the dark?). Makes you feel unexpectedly and forcibly deprived. And this experience is expensive. More expensive than the price of the ticket. Why suddenly about the price? Because But at the premiere there was a disgusting scene of a riot of a part of the public - including accusations of fraud, and, I'm afraid, not the last. it can overwhelm him.) When you sit in the dark and human rage boils around (groundless, stupid, noisy), it is a strong feeling. This is a real experiment. And in such an aggressive environment, real empathy arises in relation to the actors who need to endure to direction ru, which is responsible for this. And empathy is after all almost the main task of the theater. So - once again - it's scary, but expensive, honest.
Yes, a propos, the darkness was already there, but not so with a sweep at the very beginning, when they had not yet had time to agree on the rules. And this is completely different. It’s like to start a word with a soft sign " [4] .
Direct Speech
Dmitry Volkostrelov about the play:
“It is important to understand that Beckett is a man who changed the European theater, but his work came to us late - in the post-Soviet time. It was an acquaintance with the author in a kind of express mode: it seems to me that the Russian theater could not fully understand and comprehend it. Therefore, we have such difficulties with any manifestation of the modern theater. Today we know from Beckett two or three main plays, but it is important to remember that Beckett did not stop writing after these few, in fact early plays, developing his method and language. On the material of nine short, very different, but at the same time very similar pieces reflected in each other, written from 1965 to 1983 for theater, radio and television, we are interested in delving into the stage study of Beckett’s texts, which are unknown in Russia today. We will try to get a little closer to this author, so important for the theater, to get closer to the theater, to art and life in Beketov's understanding. ” [five]
