Biography

Born in 1930 in Santiago , the capital of Chile, in the family of Louis and Leonita Soto. He studied law at the university, but he did not work for a day by profession. Having emigrated from his native country, he worked as an assistant director in several Argentine and Ecuadorian film projects. He has written several books, among which is Week by Week ( Spanish: Semana a semana ), which have had regular criticism success.

By the time he returns to Chile, Latin American cinema is experiencing a real boom, which has been the result of the widespread introduction of 16 mm film . In 1964, Soto graduated from the University of Chile and released a short film, which became his debut. His first well-known film, released in 1967, The ABC of Love, was filmed by an international group of directors - the Brazilian Eduardo Coutinho , the Argentine Rodolfo Coon and the Chilean Elvio Soto. A short drama was presented at the Berlin Film Festival [4] .

The director was part of the Experimental Cinema group led by Pedro Chaskel , uniting young filmmakers who had an avant-garde and unconventional approach to cinema.

Since 1970, he has held administrative positions on National Television .

In 1975, Soto made his most famous film, the political drama “ It Rides in Santiago, ” a joint French - Bulgarian production about the 1973 military coup . For obvious reasons, the tape was banned from being shown in the country captured by the junta, but had considerable success on the European continent [5] .

After 1984, Elvio devoted himself to documenting and helping young filmmakers, briefly returning to the profession in the late 90s, having shot several episodes of the Santiago City TV series.

Death

He passed away in 2001 at the age of 71.
