Translation ( lat. Translatio - transfer, transfer) is a symmetric transformation, as a result of which the node of the spatial lattice coincides with another nearest identical node. In this sense, it is a special case of parallel transfer.
In a slightly different sense, translation is the shortest distance between identical nodes. The terms identity period, broadcast period, or series parameter are also used.
Three non-coplanar translations define the sides of a primitive unit cell in a crystal lattice .
