Kalvaliai ( lit. Kalveliai ) is a village on the territory of the Vilnius region self-government, 27 km east of Vilnius and 3 km from the border with Belarus , at the Vilnius- Shumskas motorway and the Vilnius- Minsk railway. The center of the elder (sianuni) is an area of 11,894 hectares, in whose territory there are 32 villages and about 5,000 inhabitants [1] .

Infrastructure
There is a post office, an outpatient clinic (since 1984 ), a pharmacy, a kindergarten, two former secondary schools, now gymnasiums (one “Aušros” with teaching in Lithuanian, the other S. Moniuškos in Polish and Russian), a culture house ( 1959 ), library ( 1950 ). In the nearby fish ponds Margiai, the Akvilegija fish farm is operating [2] . Not far from the village of Kalvaliai are the Kään railway station and a customs post. [2]
In 2000, the first Church of Mercy of God in Lithuania was built in the village. The authors of the project are the architect Tadeusz Derlyatka from Radom and Mechislav Jagusinsky from Vilnius. In 2007, the first bronze monument to Pope John Paul II was unveiled near the church in 2007 , funds for which were collected among the parishioners for several years. The monument was cast in Poland [1] .
Population
In 1882 there were 24 inhabitants, in 1897 there were about 200 people (there were 6 stores), in 1920 there were about 450 people. According to the 1959 census , 564 people lived in the village, in 1970 - 1337, in 1979 - 1503, in 1989 - 2021 inhabitants, in 2001 - 1848 people [2] . In 2011, 1592 people lived in the village. [3] .
History
The village began to form at the end of the 19th century [2] . In 1882 there were six trading shops and about 200 inhabitants [1] . In 1921, an elementary school was opened here [3] . Since 1957, a peat factory has been operating here (to the south-east of the village there is the Margiai peat bog). In Soviet times, the village (in 1950 - 1992 ) was the apilinka center and the central estate of the collective farm [2] [3] .
