History

The pavilion was built in 1952-1954 by the collective of the Moscow architectural studio GPI Gorstroyproekt - Ruben Begunts and S. I. Nikulin. It was supposed to place an exposition of the Central Black Earth Region in it, but in the end the decision was changed in favor of the exposition of the RSFSR. The pavilion was built in the style of the Stalinist empire , its central facade is decorated with a portico of six Corinthian columns and completed with a sculptural composition from the coat of arms of the RSFSR in the center (subsequently replaced by the coat of arms of the USSR ) and cornucopia at the edges. Inside the porch loggia, a concave semicircular wall is decorated with a fresco “The peoples of Russia built socialism” (artists Oksana Pavlenko and B.F. Witz). The mural depicts the triumphant people of different professions and nationalities inhabiting the RSFSR, as well as some recognizable buildings located in the republic (for example, the floodgates of the Volga-Don Canal , the building of Moscow State University ). In the center of the composition, people are holding banners and a portrait of Lenin , which also originally featured an image of Stalin , subsequently painted over to discredit the cult of personality (in this form, the fresco has been preserved to this day). Decorative rotundas are attached to the side facades of the pavilion, above which are sculptures of a tractor driver and a collective farmer (authors - Pavel Bondarenko , P.V. Koenig). The friezes of the building are decorated with stucco with patterns on agricultural subjects. Inside the pavilion is divided into six rooms under six sections of the exhibition. The introductory hall along the perimeter is decorated with half-columns, between which there are 14 panels on the theme of collectivization and industrialization of the work of Grigory Opryshko [4] [3] .

Initially, the pavilion housed an exposition dedicated to the national economy of the RSFSR in its various branches. At the same time, a separate pavilion for the largest republic of the Soviet Union appeared only during the post-war reconstruction of the exhibition, while it was not at the pre-war exhibition, and there were only pavilions dedicated to individual macro-regions and autonomous Soviet republics that are part of the RSFSR. In 1959, the exposure profile narrowed, and it became known as the "Industry of the RSFSR." And in 1963, the theme was completely changed, and the exposition "Atomic Energy" was located in the pavilion. There were placed stands on the topic of nuclear energy , as well as models of equipment used in the "peaceful atom" industry, including models of nuclear reactors and nuclear installations. In particular, the principles of the operation of nuclear power plants and nuclear icebreakers were demonstrated using prototype models [4] [3] .
