Biography
Born April 13, 1876 in Moscow in the family of a petty official. Since 1892 he studied at the Moscow Land Surveying Institute . At this time, he became interested in drawing and painting, participated in student exhibitions, designed performances. I did not receive professional art education. He was independently engaged in painting and music. He was fond of the art of M.A. Vrubel and art nouveau graphics. At this time, through his classmate, N. N. Sapunova met S. Yu. Sudeikin , P. V. Kuznetsov and others. He wanted to act like Sapunov at the Moscow School of Painting , but he was not satisfied with the teaching methods, in connection with which, in 1900-1903, he attended the studio of K. F. Yuon . In 1900-1901 he designed the magazine "Ant".
In 1903, during a trip to St. Petersburg, Feofilaktov met with S. P. Diaghilev , who attracted him to work in the World of Art . There he meets V. Ya. Bryusov . He invites him to collaborate in Libra , in which Feofilaktov soon becomes a leading artist. At this time, he became interested in the work of the English schedule O. Beardsley , for which he received the nickname "Moscow Beardsley." Feofilaktov also collaborated in 1904-1909 with the publishing house Scorpio , whose logo is considered one of the first successes of the schedule.
In 1904-1905, Feofilaktov, together with N. N. Sapunov, performed the scenery for the production of the poetic drama “Three Rises” by K. D. Balmont in the Literary and Art Circle. Collaborated with the Golden Fleece magazine. In 1904, Feofilaktov and his friends took part in the exhibition “ Scarlet Rose ”. In 1906, Feofilaktov made his first trip to Venice, which had a great influence on his work. In 1907, Feofilaktov became close to the artists of the Blue Rose and participated in their exhibitions. From 1906 to 1913 almost every year he comes to Italy, in addition he visited Paris and Vienna. In 1908 he lived in Paris, where for some time he improved his skills at the Academy of Colarossi .
In 1906, Feofilaktov, together with the creative group of V.E. Meyerhold, arrived in St. Petersburg. There he met M. A. Kuzmin , who began a short affair with S. Yu. Sudeikin, who also arrived. Feofilaktov became a passionate admirer of the poet (and maybe a lover [1] ) and designed a number of his books [2] . In 1910, he worked with S. Yu. Sudeikin and N. N. Sapunov at the Intermedia House in St. Petersburg. In 1910, the Scorpion Publishing House issued an album of his drawings, which included 66 of his works.
In the years 1911-1932 Feofilaktov began to actively engage in painting. At the exhibition "World of Art" in 1913, his works "Lady" and "Gypsies" were exhibited, in 1915 - "In the vicinity of Rome. Italy ”,“ Abruzzi ”,“ Venice ”. From 1918 to 1928 he created a series of Italian landscapes. In 1918, the Tretyakov Gallery acquired a number of drawings by N. P. Feofilaktov and the watercolor “Gypsies”.
In 1920-1923, Feofilaktov served in the museum department of the People's Commissariat for Education as the senior curator of the Museum of New Western Painting. In 1923 he worked on a decorative panel for the Agricultural Exhibition in Moscow . In 1924 he worked at the Maly Theater, performed an anniversary mark for the centenary of the theater and a number of portraits of artists (Yuzhin, Davydov). At the same time, he worked in the publishing house " Young Guard ". In 1925-1927, Feofilaktov performed a number of graphic works for the All-Russian Union of Poets . From 1925 to 1937 he illustrated and designed books in Moscow publishing houses: State. publishing house of the History of the Civil War and the History of factories, "Moscow Partnership of Writers" and others. In 1933-1937, Feofilaktov actively collaborated with the Academia Publishing House, where he designed the books of V. Bryusov, Hoffmann, Shakespeare, L. Stern and others.
In 1926, Feofilaktov participated in the exhibition “4 Arts” in the Historical Museum, in 1927 - in the exhibition “Graphics of the USSR for 10 years” in the State Tretyakov Gallery. In 1930 he worked at the Institute of Marx and Engels . During this period he completed a series of drawings acquired by A. V. Lunacharsky and A. S. Yakovlev. In 1933, Feofilaktov took part in the exhibition “Artists of the RSFSR for 15 years” in the Museum of Fine Arts, and in 1936 in the exhibition “15 Years of Soviet Graphics”. Since 1938, Feofilaktov left his job at publishing houses, wanting to devote himself entirely to painting.
Feofilaktov died on February 9, 1941 of tuberculosis, which he fell ill with two years earlier. He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery.
