Life and work

Kano Takanobu was born December 1, 1571 in Kyoto [1] . He was the youngest son of the head of the Kano school of painting , the illustrious artist Kano Eitoku and the younger brother of the artist Kano Mitsunobu [2] [3] .

When, around 1610-1615, Kano Naganobu (1577-1654), the older brother of Kano Eitoku, who, upon the order of the Tokugawa shogunate came to power , moved to the city of Edo , Kano Takanobu remained at the head of the branch of the Kano school in Kyoto. At that time, Takanobu received dozens of work orders from authorities and wealthy nobles. After the death of Kano Aitoku, only Naganobu and Takanobu possessed sufficient skill and authority to stand at the head of the school and transfer the skill and traditions of the school to students [2] .

With financial support from the Tokugawa Shogunate, Takanobu created murals for the new palace of Emperor Go-Mizunoo in 1614. The work included many sliding panels in the palace and adjacent buildings [4] . Also, twenty-three panels depicting thirty-two Chinese sages in the throne room of the Shishin Imperial Palace in Kyoto are attributed authorship to Kano Takanobu [5] . Murals were created with paints on silk and attached to wood panels. Chinese sages were the traditional motive for painting in the palaces, since the monarchs liked to personify themselves with these patterns of wisdom and morality [5] . These murals are one of the few surviving works of the artist and the oldest surviving works of art in the palace hall [6] .

In 1617, the eldest son, Takanobu Kano Tanyu, went to the city of Edo and became the first official painter ( goo esi ) Shogunate Tokugawa [7] [8] . After the death of Takanobu, Kano's school in Kyoto was headed by his second son, Kano Naonobu (1607-1650), but in 1630 he also moved to Edo and received the status of goo esi there [9] [8] . The school in Kyoto was first led by Kano Sadanobu , and then the youngest son of Takanobu, Kano Yasunobu . He also went to the older brothers in Edo, while remaining the official head of the school in Kyoto [10] .
