Biography and Creativity

Kano Naonobu was born in Kyoto on November 25, 1607. He was the second son of the master of the school Kano Kano Takanobu and the grandson of the famous Kano Eytoku . His elder brother Kano Tanyu became one of the most prominent representatives of the school after he became the first official painter of the Tokugawa Shogunate in his youth [2] [3] .

In 1630, after the brother of the shogunate Kano Naonobu in the city of Edo , where he settled in one of the workshops of the Kano school and received the special status of Goyo Esi (court painter at the shogunate) [3] . In Edo, he studied under the guidance of his brother Tanya and quickly adopted his technique and techniques [4] . The brothers created many joint large-scale murals commissioned by the shogunate [3] .

Naonobu's style and career differed significantly from Tanya. The younger brother was more involved in monochrome ink painting , and also often used negative space in his works. Unlike the work of his brother, his drawings were in a more free, almost sketchy manner. Works in the Yamato-e genre had a more pronounced Japanese flavor. On the gilded sliding doors and screens, he would rather outline the shape of the object, rather than delineate it [3] . An example is the painting of the Fujimi saigyo-ju bebubu screen , where Mount Fuji is barely marked against the background of a large negative space, there is only a lone figure of a seated and contemplating person in the foreground [4]

In life outside art, Naonobu had the nickname Sume ( Jap. 主 馬 ). He loved to travel to Kyoto to visit his friend, the artist and aristocrat Kobori Masakazu . During one of these trips in 1650, Kano Naonobu disappeared. It was believed that he died from the disease, although rumors circulated that he drowned while fishing or went to China [3] .
